  • Dive Against Debris At Male' West

Dive Desk is pleased to engage our Divemaster Candidates and Divers in a Dive Against Debris at Male' West on 15 September 2017. We encourage all the PADI professionals we train and our divers to connect their passion for ocean adventure with a purpose for marine conservation. We encourage them to take 'fins on' action for the ocean and tackle ocean threats like marine pollution and habitat destruction. In the course of 3 hours, 80kg of trash were collected by only six divers alone. It is disheartening to see the ocean made a dump-yard, to see the living space of 80% of Earth's living organisms that make life possible for us humans being trashed. We must take better care of the oceans to enable the oceans to take care of us. • Dive Desk holds Worlds' First Glaucoma Awareness Dive

Dive Desk is pleased to sponsor the dive event for creating awareness of the potentially blinding disease glaucoma during the World Glaucoma Awareness Week 2017, organized by Maldicare Clinic with media coverage provided by RaajeTV. Maldicare will provide free testing for glaucoma at their clinic for the day. The World Glaucoma Week is marked globally from 12-18 March every year. A dive event to mark this year's World Glaucoma Week in Maldives is the brainchild of MaldiCares' visiting consultant ophthalmologist Dr. Devin Prabhakar, who has also done PADI Open Water Diver Course with Dive Desk. As part of the World Glaucoma Week, the doctor will do eye checkup and dental screening for air pocket issues for participating divers, free at Maldicare Clinic. Glaucoma is commonly detected by measuring the pressure in the eye. When eye pressure increases the optic nerve gradually becomes damaged. If left unchecked, this can result in serious vision loss. High eye pressure may exist without noticeable symptoms so many people do not even know that they have the disease. When symptoms do become noticeable, it's usually very late and significant loss of vision would have occurred. It is estimated that 4.5 million persons globally are blind due to glaucoma and that this number will rise to 11.2 million by 2020. Glaucoma is called the silent killer of sight as it has no warning symptoms. Scuba diving is all about taking safety measures to ensure a perfect dive and an amazing experience. Diving is awesome if your vision is clear. Check eyes yearly to see clearly. Various different types of activities are done during the World Glaucoma Week across the world. Dive Desk is proud to play a key role in the first-ever dive event for World Glaucoma Week to raise awareness about glaucoma, encourage screening, boost public education and urge people to get tested.

  • Dive Desk Facilitates Water Safety Sessions To Galolhu Madharusa Pre-Schoolers in 2016

Dive Desk is delighted with the opportunity by Galolhu Madharusa to conduct a Water Safety session for the pre-schoolers, for the second year in running. Being able to explore and play enables children to develop, grow and learn, and become confident and capable. We applaud the school's initiative to create a safe environment for children to explore even outside of school by providing information on basic safety skills. The earlier you start conversations surrounding basic safety the better, and this needs to be an ongoing conversation. It was lovely seeing youngsters so keen for knowledge. We hope our talk brought a positive influence on their behavior, from getting motivated to learn swimming, to always wearing a life-jacket on boat even when you know how to swim to many other basic information to help create a safe environment for kids to explore. Dive Desk thanks the administration for the wonderful opportunity to impart a bit of our knowledge to the kids.

  • Dive Desk at 1 Nation Coral Revival Event

Dive Desk is delighted to join efforts with a wide range of stakeholders in marine conservation for the 2-day 1 Nation Coral Revival Event at Villingili, organized by Save the Beach Maldives. A big thank you to our Divemaster Candidates and Divers for putting in the manpower to transplant corals from Male' Atoll Uthuru Thila Falhu, a land reclamation site, to a metal frame installed at Villingili house-reef, helping raise awareness around the human impact on environment as well as rehabilitate degraded reefs around the island. The weekend festival saw a wide range of stakeholders, from NGOs, dive centers, government organizations, United Nations organizations, media to schools joining in the conservation to find ways to preserve our vulnerable environment, mitigate damages and devise ways to enjoy the underwater habitats without harming the corals and fish. It was wonderful to see so many nature lovers come together to raise their voices to create awareness on the impact of development and infrastructure projects on our coral reef ecosystems. The event set out to mark the significance of coral reefs to ocean biodiversity, ecosystems and our livelihoods. There is no second Maldives, it is the only one nation we have, and we need our corals systems to survive for us to continue to inhabit these islands we call home.
