Hydroids

Feathery and plant-like at first glance, hydroids are colonies of tiny stinging animals — distant cousins of corals, sea anemones, and jellyfish. Each slender branch is alive with polyps that catch plankton from the current. Though delicate, hydroids can spread across reef surfaces, competing for space and offering shelter to small reef creatures that weave between their fine tendrils.
