Coralline Algae

Hard pink crusts of coralline algae bind coral fragments together, cementing the reef into a single structure. These unseen masons are essential to reef strength and regeneration, even as grazing sea stars nibble at their surface. Yet, by clearing space, the sea stars also help guide coral larvae to settle, following the algae’s natural blueprint for new reef growth.
